Ohope Beach Thursday 7th April 2016

Looks like I have my blog problems sorted out after a real challenge. Isn't how I usually do it but managed to work out another way and it worked, so here's hoping I can continue with it. Still not sure why my pictures won't upload from my iPad and iPhone.

Woke up to another  perfect day by our 6.00am alarm to go on Pee Jay's boat trip to White Island off Whakatane. Bit early after our trip down yesterday. Really enjoying this weather without the Auckland humidity. Much fresher.
What a great day, would recommend it to everyone spectacular as you will see from the below photos which will speak  for themselves. We left the wharf at 7.45am.

 Leaving the wharf 7.45am

Going out through the bar. The statue is the daughter of Turoa, the captain of  an old sailing ship the Mataatua.

I always enjoy this beautiful sight when  the dolphins swim with the boat. They stayed with us for awhile while the captain slowed the boat down.

We are on our way wrapped up in our jackets in the early cooler air. We were travelling at approx 17/18knots.

Approaching White Island with the steam and sulphur blowing out of the ground.

Four loads of twelve went to shore on this boats.

View from the boat while we were waiting our turn. The boat remains moored about 100 metres off shore.

We were issued with our hard hats and gas masks getting well prepared. I thought the gas masks were for emergencies but know once you walk closer to the steam it starts choking you when it blows towards you. We didn't need them all the time.

Boat moored out.

Walking toward the steam and sulphur.

Masks now on

Some of our group.

Walking back to the boat. All flat walking as all the steam comes out of the ground just above sea level as you can see.

Walked through the ruins of the old sulphur mine looking towards our boat.

Left White Island in the background after a great experience.

Crossing through the bar back to the moorings.

Ohope Beach just in front of our Motel. I took these again this afternoon as yesterdays photos were taken late afternoon and came out a bit dark.

We have enjoyed our two nights here and move on up the East Coast to Hicks Bay tomorrow.
